By the early twentieth century, Hitt had relocated to New York, becoming part of the growing professional class drawn to the region’s expanding financial and suburban opportunities. He married Margaret Welles Hamilton on August 31, 1905, and together they raised four children He eventually settled in Rye, New York, where he resided on Highland Road and became a long-time member of the community.

World War I Service

Hitt entered military service on July 17, 1918, when he was appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the National Army and assigned to the General Staff of the United States Army. The General Staff Corps was responsible for high-level planning, coordination, and administration, supporting the Chief of Staff in managing the rapidly expanding Army during wartime.
