Jack W. Lawrence was born in New York June 2, 1907 to Jack Lawrence and Pearl Beck. In Rye his family lived at 38 Redfield Street and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Jack enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was originally scheduled to leave with the
group of draftees from Rye In January of 1941, but after hurried preparations
for departure, he failed to pass the
army physical examination. Although
otherwise physically fit, he was rejected because he did not have the
required number of teeth. He suffered
an accident when a boy and wears a
plate.

He was eventually deemed fit to serve and was assigned to the 109th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division. Jack rose to the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal as a result of wounds suffered during the Battle of the Bulge.

Sergt. Jack Lawrence Missing In France Since December 17

Sgt. Jack Lawrence of the 109th Infantry, 28th Division, who was awarded the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Clusters, has been reported missing in action in France since December 17. A Rye resident before entering the service, Sgt. Lawrence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lawrence, Sr. , of New York City. His mother, the former Pearl Beck, is a member of an old Rye family.

Sgt. Lawrence was offered an opportunity to return to the United States after he was wounded, but preferred to rejoin his regiment in the historic defense of Luxembourg against Von Runstedts German forces. He was reported missing directly after this battle.

Jack Lawrence of 21 N. Main died Wednesday November 13, 1985 at Western Care Nursing Home in Montana after a long illness. He was 78.

He had lived in Florida, Butte, MT and at the Soldiers Home in Colubmia Falls, MT. Jack had worked for a newspaper in New York. His body was taken to Terrytown, N.Y., for military graveside services in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Hagler Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
