Howard Goon G. Lew

Howard Goon G. Lew was born in Canton, China February 2, 1916. He attended Rye schools and was a restaurant manager. Howard enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

PVT. HOWARD G. LEW, formerly of Rye, is now on duty at the 34th General Hospital, Brigham City, Utah, having completed his basic training at Camp. Pickett, Va., and Camp Garson, Colo. Howard- attended Rye.
schools before entering the armed forces.

The 34th Army General Hospital was a U.S. Army medical unit activated during World War II, primarily staffed by personnel from Duke University Medical Center. After its activation in 1942, the hospital was deployed to the European Theater, where it provided critical medical support to Allied forces.

Stationed at various locations in England and France, the unit treated thousands of casualties from major operations such as the Normandy invasion. The 34th Army General Hospital was recognized for its advanced medical care and played a vital role in saving lives throughout the war.

HOWARD GOON LEW, former Rye resident, and his bride, Yim, whom he met and married while visiting his relatives in China. Howard attended Rye schools and previous to World War II, in which he served for three and a half years, was a restaurant manager. The couple expect to return to the States about the middle of February.

Sgt. Goon Howard Lew was the guest of Mrs. F. H. Olfers and lamily, 545 Boston Post Road, Rye, while on a recent furlough.

A manager of a large Chinese-American restaurant before his induction, Sgt. Lew plans to open a restaurant in Rye after the war. He has received a good conduct ribbon for the completion of a year’s service, and is now in Spadra, Calif..

As of October 30, 2025 we can not determine if Howard ever opened his restaurant or returned to Rye with his wife. Howard Goon Lew died in Flushing, NY July 15, 1998
