Early Life

George Ernest Light was born on November 23, 1891, in Port Chester, New York, the son of Isaac J. Light and Mary Jane McGuire. He grew up in a large working-class family in the Rye and Port Chester area.

His siblings included John William Light, Katherine Louise Light, Margaret J. Light, Mary E. Light, Esther Jane Light, and James Edward Light, along with several infant siblings noted in family records. His early life included significant family loss, including the deaths of multiple siblings as well as his parents.

World War I Service

George E. Light was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 28, 1918, at Port Chester, New York. He was assigned to the 157th Depot Brigade, responsible for training and processing soldiers, and later transferred to the Machine Gun Training Center at Camp Hancock, Georgia.

Although his service record does not document combat assignment, obituary records indicate that he served overseas during the war period.

He served as a Private and was honorably discharged on February 3, 1919, with no wounds reported.

Life After Service

After the war, Light lived in Rye and Port Chester and worked for many years in local service roles, including employment with the John C. Thomas Funeral Company and later at United Hospital.

He was a member of Port Chester Post No. 93 of the American Legion.

George Ernest Light died on October 1, 1968, at United Hospital in Port Chester, New York.

He was survived by his sister, Katherine Louise Mattison, and several nieces and nephews.
