Marie L. Malsch was born in Derby, Connecticut on May 17, 1917 to Henry and Elizabeth Garretson Malsch. She had one sister Elise and in Rye her family lived on Locust Lane. Marie was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1934.

She graduated from the United Hospital School of Nursing in 1937.

Miss Marie L. Malsch, of 42 Breckenridge Avenue, Port Chester, formerly of Rye, was guest of honor at a dinner party at the Birch Brook Inn, Bronxville, last evening. She was presented with regulation purse and regulation gloves. Miss Malsch, who is on the nursing staff of the United Hospital, has been sworn in as an Ensign in the U. S. Navy, and will leave on April 18 for the -Brooklyn Naval Hospital.

She enlisted April 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp. during World War II. Marie served as a Navy nurse and was stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital.

During World War II, Navy nurses at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital played a critical role in treating thousands of wounded sailors and marines, with the hospital reaching a peak capacity of 1,125 patients. These nurses provided essential care to combat casualties, managed the influx of personnel, and were among the first in the Navy to receive formal military rank.

After the war, Marie was a nurse secretary for Dr. Higgins in Rye. She then worked in a research program at St. Luke’s Convalescent Hospital, Greenwich.

She married George Krois in 1951 and they would have a daughter during their marriage. Marie served many years as an officer in the United Hospital Nurses Association.

She was a bridge enthusiast and played in many local tournaments. She was also a member of the local Business Woman’s Club and chaired many events in the late 1940’s and 1950’s.

Marie L. Malsch Krois died Saturday June 15, 1963 at the Greenwich Hospital. She was 46 years old.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband George Krois, daughter Deborah, mother Mrs. Elizabeth Malsch and her sister Elise Tillman of Riverdale, NY.

She was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich, CT
