Richard Frederick Mann 

Richard Frederick Mann was born on January 24, 1924, in Port Chester, New York, to Emily Grace Thompson and Jacob Frederick Mann.In Rye his family lived at 66 Orchard Avenue and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Richard was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942.

 

He enlisted November 12, 1942 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. For over 2 years Richard served on ships in Newfoundland, Iceland and Ireland as a Gunners Mate 2/c.

A Gunner’s Mate Second Class (GM2c) in the US Coast Guard during WWII was an essential enlisted rating responsible for maintaining, repairing, and operating all shipboard weapons, including machine guns, 5-inch guns, and small arms. They ensured unit readiness during combat, escort, and amphibious landing operations.

Richard’s Active Duty Service Number 648-565 and he was honorably discharged September 22, 1945

He married Anna Hershkell on Feb. 17, 1945 in the rectory of Holy Trinity Church by the Rev. Bartholomew J.
Singleton. Their first son was born prematurely and became a sensational news story as the smallest child born and survive. “It was an eye-dropper of Scotch every two hours for the first four days.’ said nurse Jean Bird of New Rochelle.

After the war, Richard worked for the Apawamis Club in Rye. The family moved to Mamaroneck and he was a super indent of an apartment complex. At one point the family relocated to Florida.

Richard Frederick Mann died on June 2, 2016, in Englewood, Florida, at the age of 92.
