Everett J. Marks

Everett J. Marks was born October 11, 1921 in New York to Samuel J Marks and Ermine Marus. He had two sisters and in Rye his family lived on Bradford Avenue. Everett was a graduate from Harrison High School and attended Cornell University.

Everett served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was in a V-12 unit stationed at Hampden Sidney College, Va, for training. he was then assigned to the USS Riddle (DE-185)

The USS Riddle (DE-185) was a Cannon-class destroyer escort in service with the United States Navy during World War II. It earned 12 battle stars for its service, more than any other destroyer escort

The ship was laid down on July 29, 1943, launched on October 17, 1943, and commissioned on November 17, 1943.

The Riddle served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, conducting convoy escort and anti-submarine patrols. A notable action occurred on July 4, 1944, when, with the assistance of the USS David W. Taylor (DD-551), it successfully sank the Japanese submarine I-10.

In April 1945, while off Okinawa, the Riddle was attacked by two Japanese kamikaze aircraft. One crashed into the ship, causing damage and killing one crewman. After repairs, it resumed patrol and escort duties.

Everett served for three years in the U. S. Navy. (See Muster Rolls)

He married Ethel Ross on July 14, 1950, in New York and spent his career as an engineer working in the Metropolitan NY area.
