Fred W. Markell

A native of Rye, Fred W. Markell was born March 3, 1904, son of Mary Grace Riccio Markell and John Markell. In Rye his family lived at 58 Maple Avenue. He was educated in Rye schools and attended the Church of the Resurrection.

Fred enlisted and served in the US Army during World War II. He served with Company B of the 30th Medical Regiment

During WW2 Medical Detachments were “attached” to each Infantry Regiment. Their mission was to help conserve the strength of the Regiment by taking the necessary preventive and sanitary measures, and provide appropriate medical and dental treatment.

Detachments were responsible for first echelon medical service in combat situations, including emergency medical treatment in the field, removal of battle casualties, and establishment of Aid Stations for the reception, triage, temporary care, and treatment of casualties.

After the war, Fred married Alice Clooney and they had one son. Prior to his retirement he worked as an assembler at Pratt-Daniel Corp. in Norwalk.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held at the Church of the Resurrection for Fred W. Markell, 69, of 15 Grace Church Street, who died Friday October 5, 1973 at the Rosary Hill Hospital in Hawthorne where he had been a patient since Sept. 24. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

At the time of his death, in addition to his mother, he was survived by his wife, Alice Clooney Markell; a son William, the Mamaroneck court clerk; three sisters, Mrs. Emil Ravenda of Port Chester, Mrs. Peter Barresi of Port Chester and Mrs. Joseph Bucci of Rye; two brothers, Maurice, a golf pro at the Westchester Country Club, of Port Chester and Daniel of Rye; and several nieces and nephews.
