Robert Jesse Mayer
Robert Jesse Mayer was born on November 28, 1909, in New York, the son of Jesse and Edna May Mayer. In Rye his family lived at 68 Greenhaven Rd. he was an alumnus of Choate School and Yale.
Robert enlisted and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve. He served in the Pacific and European theaters of war.
In September of 1943 he was serving aboard the USS Cimarron (AO-22). (see Muster Rolls)
USS Cimarron (AO-22): The lead ship of the first Cimarron-class of fleet oilers. It served from before World War II through the Vietnam War, making it the oldest US Navy ship in continuous active service at the time of its decommissioning in 1968. It played a critical role in the Pacific theater during World War II, participating in operations such as the Doolittle Raid, the Battle of Midway, and the campaigns for Guadalcanal and Okinawa, earning 10 battle stars.
Robert married Barbara Anne Rubenoff of Maplewood, N. J. in New York on July 31, 1947 when he was 37 years old. The Rev. Clark W. Hunt, pastor of Asbury Church, Crestwood, N. Y.. performed the ceremony in the chapel of Christ Church, Methodist, New York. The couple and had one son.
Robert Jesse Mayer died on April 13, 2002, in Fort Myers, Florida, at the age of 92.
