Description

James Joseph Ellsworth McMurray was born on September 23, 1913, in New York, New York, to E. Mary Tenbroek, age 37, and James Joseph McMurray, age 40. He had one sister Caroline and in Rye his family lived at 181 Purchase Street.

James was a 1932 graduate of Rye High School. Before the war he was working at Westchester Country Club.

James served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He went overseas in April 1944 and was an armament officer for the 36th Fighter Group.

The 36th Fighter Group operated primarily as a fighter-bomber organization, strafing and dive-bombing armored vehicles, trains, bridges, buildings, factories, troop concentrations, gun emplacements, airfields, and other targets.

His group received a presidential Unit Citation for their role in strategic bombing of German objectives in Northern France and Belgium.

James married Anne Stroetzel in 1945 and moved to Ft. Anne, N.Y. where they owned and operated The Busy Bee Hotel, a name which pretty much captured Anne’s spirit throughout her life. They later relocated to Glens Falls, N.Y.

James continued to serve as a major in the Air Force Reserve and was a former commander and lieutenant colonel in the Tri-County Civil Air Patrol.

James was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls. He was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as an insurance representative, retiring in 1974.

James E. McMurray, 65, of 33 Sierra St., Glens Falls, died Wednesday (April 3, 1979) in Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness.

At the time of his death, survivors included his wife, Anne McMurray: two sons, James M, McMurray of Richmond, Va., and John P. McMurray of Stoughton, Mass.; two grandsons; a sister, Mrs. George (Caroline) Parloini of White Plains, and two nephews.

Services were conducted at the Potter Funeral Home, 136 Warren St., by the Rev. George Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hudson Falls.
