William T. Mc Vicar was born March 15 1922 in Rye He was the son of Thomas and Guy an (DeVeaux) McVicar. In Rye his family lived at 19 Dearborn Avenue. William was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941.

He enlisted in 1941 and served in World War II as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps. He attained the rank of first lieutenant.

A co-pilot, Lieut. McVicar was in
Italy with a B-24 Liberator bombardment group.
His organization took part in
many successful attacks on important
Nazi installations, for which commendation was received from higher headquarters.

The targets they hit
included Germany, Austria, France,
northern Italy, and Yugoslavia.
Lieut. McVicar entered the service
on Aug. 8, 1941, upon graduating from
Rye High School. He was a member
of the Fifth Infantry in Panama. He received his wings in October, 1943,
and since arriving in Italy has participated in 19 combat missions.

William was the owner and operator of Thomas McVicar Sheet Metal Contractors Co in Yonkers. He retired from his business and took over as Rye Harbormaster in March 1980.

He succeeded George DePauw who retired. The marina then was named in DePauw’s honor.

At times William’s duties in overseeing the marina included a bout with a stubborn swan which had been terrorizing boaters.

William T McVicar harbormaster at the Rye municipal boat basin died Wednesday January 15,1982 at United Hospital. He was 56. He was a native of Rye and lived a 122 Milton Road

William had been a sick leave from his Job since last summer.

“To be able to find two men (DePauw and Mr McVicar) who were truly dedicated to the operation of the marina is something that Rye residents have come to admire” said Ralph Damiano city recreation superintendent “He’s a great loss to the facility and he’ll be sorely missed”

Damiano has been supervising the marina while McVicar was on sick leave, Charles Ely, Bob Kohlasch, Robert Chittenden and Sal Samperi have helped in the marina’s daily operations Damiano said.

At the time of his death, William was survived by his wife the former Barbara McCarthy of the home address a son Brian M of Somers, three daughters Linda Murphy of Florida, Susan Ventresca of Pawling and Wendy McVicar of Rye and two grandchildren
