George Meyer was born on October 11, 1901, in Germany to Anna Reyelts and Peter Meyer. In Rye his family lived at 193 Purchase Street. Before the war he was working as a butcher at Gristede Brothers in Larchmont, NY.
George enlisted November 20, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
SEVENTY-EIGHT SELECTEES LEAVE THIS MORNING FOR ARMY SERVICE
The selectees were taken to Mamaroneck railroad station in cars provided through the Womens Defense Council, headed by Mrs. E. B. Ingraham.

George served as a PFC with the 1st Battalion, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division. The 77th was reactivated in March 1942 and deployed to the Pacific Theater. Soldiers from the 77th were older than average, earning them the nickname “The Old Bastards” from U.S. Marines on Guam.
The division made an assault landing on Guam in July 1944 and secured the island after intense fighting. It landed on Leyte in November 1944 and successfully seized the key town of Ormoc, an action that included the unique instance of M10 tank destroyers sinking a Japanese naval vessel from land. The 77th secured the Kerama Islands and then Ie Shima, where war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed. It then fought on Okinawa, leading the drive to capture Shuri Castle.
George was honorably discharged June 2, 1945 and returned to Rye.
He married Marion Wenzel on September 2, 1945, in Greenwich, Connecticut. They had two children during their marriage.
George was a resident of Port Chester for 14 years and prior to that a resident of Rye City for 10 years. He was employed as a butcher at the Jay-Dee Market in Rye
He was a member of Germania-Maennerchor Society of Port Chester and attended St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Byram.
George E Meyer, 56, of 91 Bowman Ave Port Chester died May 4, 1959 after a brief illness.
At the time of his death, survivors included his mother, his wife Marion Wenzel Meyer and two children Joyce Marlene and Richard Philip of the the home address a brother Henry Meyer of Franklin Square ,L I and three brothers and a sister in Germany
