John J. Morgan was born in 1928 in New York. He lived at 11 Richard Place with his parents, John Sr. and Ruth Morgan, his younger brother James and his older sister Joan. His father worked as a court clerk for the City. John, also known as Johnny, attended Rye High School where he was an active participant in the intramural basketball team, track, G.O. and the annual Christmas Pageant. After graduating from Rye High School in 1946, John attended the St. Bonaventure in Allegany, N.Y. . Following his graduation from college, he joined the U.S. Army in 1951. John was an officer who served as a forward observer with the 1st Cavalry Division, 61st Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C.

LIEUT. JOHN MORGAN AWARDED BRONZE STAR MEDAL IN KOREA

WITH THE 1st CAV. DIV. IN KOREA -A Bronze Star Medal has been awarded to a Rye, N. Y., officer who made his way through heavy fire to rescue a wounded comrade.



He is 1st Lt. John J. Morgan of 11 Richard Place, Rye, and the decoration was conferred for his action on January 29 near Omaegok where he was serving as an artillery observe r for Battery C of the 61st Field Artillery Battalion. A sudden enemy attack hit his unit’s perimeter of defense without warning. Moving to a forward position. Lieutenant Morgan began directing artillery fire on the assaulting force. When a comrade was hit close by Lieutenant Morgan went through the enemy fire to evacuate the injured soldier. He then returned to his post as observer and continued to direct shells into the Communists.

The citation accompanying the decoration states in part: “His actions undoubtedly saved the life of a wounded comrade and materially aided in Inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Lieutenant Morgan’s heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and the military service. ”
