Eugene M. Murray was born in Yonkers, New York December 5, 1908 to James and Mary Murray. In Rye he lived at 37 Elm Place and was a member of the Church of the Resurrection.
He was a graduate at Cathedral High School, New York City and was employed before his induction by a construction company He had been a resident of this area for three years.
Eugene enlisted in U.S. Army during World War II. He was attached to the 339th Infantry Regiment.
The 339th Infantry Regiment was later reactivated in 1942, during World War II, to serve in the European theater, fighting in the Allied campaign in Italy from 1944 to 1945.
The regiment was assigned to the 85th Infantry Division.
As a unit of the 85th Infantry Division or “Custer” Division, the 339th Infantry saw combat service in Italy from March 1944 until the surrender of German forces in May 1945.
First Sgt Eugene M Murray attached to the 339th Infantry was wounded in May and again on Oct 11 each time in Italy is recuperating at Rhoads General Hospital Utica it was learned here this morning
The “topkick” has received the Purple Heart and for “gallantry In action May 11 and 13 1943” he has been awarded the Bronze Star.
The 35-year-old soldier a veteran of three years of military service made his home with the family of Mrs. Mary Donohue 37 Elm Place, Rye. He has been on overseas assignment for 30 months.
Eugene M. Murray died July 17, 1967 and is buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Laconia, NH
