Description
William X. Murphy was born in Port Chester, New York January 29, 1909 the son of William and Mary O’Neill Murphy. He had two brothers John and Walter and two sisters Ann and Helen. William was graduated from Our Lady of Mercy School in the village.
He had lived in Port Chester until he was approximately 18 yean old then moved to Rye. In Rye his family lived at 544 Milton Road and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. William enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
During World War II, William served in the Army’s military police as a staff sergeant. He had been in campaigns in the Philippine Islands and fought in the Battle of Luzon. He received the American Service and Asiatic -Pacific medals and a Philippine Liberation ribbon.
After the war, William had worked as a supervisor for the First National Grocery Store, (Finest) supermarket, now closed, in Rye for many yeas. He also operated his own delicatessen on Milton Rood for several years.
William married Dorothy Jane Murphy in 1960. In the early 1970’s, he and Dorothy moved to Florida. William was a member of St Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Florida and belonged to the Americas Association of Retired Persons.
William X. Murphy, 73, of 1243 S Greenwood Ave., Clearwater, died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1982).
Survivors included a son Clifford Patterson, Hastings On Hudson, N.Y.; two sisters, Helen Denton, Dover Plains, N.Y., and Ann Benjamin, Rye, and two grandchildren. Moss Fort Harrison Chapel, Clearwater.
