Description
Joseph V. O’Brien was born Oct. 28, 1922 to Mary and Joseph J. O’Brien. Along with his sister Catherine O’Brien, Joseph spent his childhood in Rye, where his father was custodian to the High School. The family lived at 46 Locust Avenue.
He was incredibly active, and loved sports as a player on the Basketball, Baseball and Boxing teams. In High School, Joseph was also a messenger and President of his Homeroom. He graduated in 1940 and worked at the Westchester Country Club.
Joseph graduated from Fordham University in 1944, immediately enlisting with the US Army Air Corps on January 21, 1944 and served during WWII.
He married Evelyn Manning on Oct. 30, 1945 in his hometown of Rye The couple settled in Rye, where Joseph became Athletic Director of the YMCA. He was bestowed the Lifesaving Award by the Rye Police Department after saving a person at his place of work.
Joseph retired from the Rye YMCA, after a lifetime of service. He relocated to Spring Hil, Fl in 1987, where he enjoyed swimming, golf and the daily crossword.
Joseph O’ Brien died Aug. 13, 2008 at the age of 85. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife Evelyn; daughter Karen; son-in-law Steve; son Joseph; daughter-in-law Ellen and grandchildren Erica and Michael. He was predeceased by son, Kevin in 1969.

Joseph V. O’Brien, 85, died August 13, 2008. Long-time resident of Rye, NY, Joe was a graduate of Rye High School and Fordham University. Former Athletic Director of the Rye YMCA, he and his wife Evelyn moved to Spring Hill, Florida. Internment will be at Greenwood Union Cemetery, in Rye, NY, on Monday, August 25 at 11:00 AM He is survived by his loving family. – See more at:
