Margaret B. O’Connor

Margaret Biddulph O’Connor was born August 23, 1901, in Rye New York daughter of Michael and Anna Daverin Biddulph. She was raised and educated in Rye and she was graduated from Rye High School around 1919 or 1920. In Rye her family lived at 81 Railroad Avenue (81Theodore Fremd Ave) and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. In the 1920’s Margaret worked in the insurance business and was part owner of the all female owned company of Billington, Taylor and Biddulph.


The marriage of Miss Margaret R. Biddulph of 81 Railroad Avenue to
John J. O’Connor, former golf professional at the
Peningo Country Club, took place Sunday evening (May 20,1928).
The ceremony was performed at the
Church of the Resurrection, the Rev.
Leo Madden officiating.
Miss Biddulph had as her bridesmaid, her cousin. Miss Kathleen Conyer of New Haven. Louis Cope, general secretary of the Y. M. C. A., was
best man.
A reception was held at Pickwick
Arms, Greenwich and was attended
by a few friends and members of the
immediate families of the couple.
Miss Biddulph graduated from the
Rye High School and has conducted
successfully a real estate and insurance business in Rye for a number of
years.
Mr. O’Connor is well known in golf
circles. He is president of the Roseland Club, a social club connected
with the Y. M. C. A.
After a honeymoon trip to Niagara
Falls, the couple will reside in Rye.

May 1928 was an eventful month for the newlyweds. The Peningo Country Club was sold to developers and she sold her insurance business one week after their marriage. It is probable that they then toured the country for his golf career. In 1935, in the depths of the great depression, her Rye house was sold at public auction. His 1942 draft card has them living in San Francisco, CA. and he was listed as self employed.

Margaret enlisted in 1944 at the age of 43, and she served in the US Army Air Force during World War II. She retired from the Air Force in 1966, after 22 years of military duty that took her to England, the Panama Canal and Europe. She was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Margaret Biddulph O’Connor, 82,: a retired Air Force staff sergeant and Rye native who had lived most recently in 1 Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died November 9, 1982 at a Florida hospital, apparently of heart disease. She had lived in Florida for approximately 16 years.

Before that, she lived in Rye, where she had been born, attended school and worked before joining the Air Force. She was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Florida and the Church’s Legion of Mary organization. Her husband, John O’Connor, is deceased. She was survived by three cousins.
