William Creighton “Tony” Peet

William Creighton “Tony” Peet was born on September 7, 1907, in Rye, New York, to Meta Brevoort Potts, age 29, and William Creighton Peet, age 35. He had two brothers Robert and John and a sister Zelia.

In Rye his family lived at 290 Grace Church St and were members of Christ’s Church. He attended St. Marks School and graduated from Harvard University in 1928.

William served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Lieut.-Comdr. and secretary of the US. Maritime Commission.

After serving in Washington, he was named vice president of Oceanic Steamship Co., and in 1959 became a vice president of Safeway. Since his retirement, he was involved in activities of the Trust for Public Land. He was also a member of the Pacific Union Club and the Burlington Game Club.

William Creighton Peet, a former Safeway vice president and secretary of the US. Maritime Commission during World War II, suffered a fatal heart attack while skiing. Mr. Peet, 74, died Saturday February 13,1982 during a skiing trip to Mount Lincoln at Sugar Bowl.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Helen Hope Peet; two daughters, Hope Austen Page and Lea Austen Hooker, both of San Francisco; two sons, David Austen of Palo Alto and William Creighton Peet III of New York City, and five grandchildren. At his own request, no formal services were held. There was a private family burial services.
