Angelo William “Pete” Peterson was born on May 2, 1909, in Rye, New York, to Lucia Russo and Fiorangelo Petrucciano (later known as Frank Peterson). He was raised in Rye, and was a graduate of Rye High School. In Rye his family lived at 56 Maple Ave.

Angelo enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

He married Edna May Cordell on August 21, 1946, in Rome, New York. They had two children during their marriage. Angello would stay in Rome, work and raise his family.

Angelo was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base for twenty-six years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church.

Angelo William “Pete” Peterson died on September 22, 1994, in Rome, New York, at the age of 85.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, two sons, James W. Peterson, Rome; Pete C. Peterson, Durhamville; one sister, Mrs. Jane Lenoci, Rye, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., at St. Peter’s Church. Interment in St. Peter’s.

This final special edition of the Mohawk Flyer commemorating the inactivating of the 416th Bomb Wing and the realignment of the Griffiss Air Force Base falls on the same day of Angelo W. Peterson’s passing one year ago today.

Angelo served as fine a instrument man, a postman, an inspector for aircraft, an electrician, a manager of veterans housing and many other jobs during his 26 years at Griffiss Air Force Base.

It makes us happy he gave a higher quality of life to all air force members and a their families and to each and everyone of us that live in this great country that he so proudly loved, honored and served.

He received a civilian certificate of faithful and devoted service of 26 years on June 30, 1972 from Colonel Bruce Brown of the 416th Bomb Wing, Griffiss Air Force Base.

Angelo not only loved working at Griffis but he also adored the golf course, the club house and the NCO Club. A lot of his most cherished memories were at Griffiss.

Griffiss Today Air we finished the final chapters of The Force Base as we prepare to close the book as Angelo Peterson did one year ago today.

We miss Angelo enormously, but we must carry.

on with our lives as all of this community will do with the closing and realignment of the base. And we must remember the higher quality of life each of us have because of Griffiss Air Force and the men and women who so proudly served it as Angelo Peterson did.
