Description

Vincent A. Rathgeb was born in Port Chester on June 20, 1924, to Vincent Arthur Rathgeb and Clara Gallagher Rathgeb. In Rye his family lived at 20 Orchard Ave. After graduating from Port Chester High School in 1942, Vincent enlisted in the US Army Air Force and served during World War II.

Vincent married Corinne Rosic on September 7, 1946.

In 1948 he graduated from Mechanics Institute, NYC and joined Rathgeb-Walsh, Inc., builder of Port Chester High School. Vincent became company vice president in 1953, and for twenty-five years supervised the construction of many schools and commercial projects locally and throughout New York State.

After joining Washington Engine and Hose Co. No. 4 in 1949 as a volunteer member, he rose through the ranks to become Port Chester Fire Chief from 1973 to 1975. In 1999, a 50-year service award was granted to him by the Port Chester Fire Department.

He was also a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local Union 11 and the Past Fire Chief’s Association. He served as an usher at the Church of Our Lady of Mercy in Port Chester for many years as well as St. Martin De Porres Parish in Poughkeepsie.

Vincent Arthur Rathgeb, Jr., of Poughkeepsie, NY, former longtime resident of Port Chester and Rye Brook, died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on April 1, 2005.

At the time of his death, survivors include his wife of 58 years, Corinne Rathgeb; daughters Barbara Franzino and husband Robert of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Mary Beth Rathgeb and husband Tun Nay Aung of Hopewell Junction, NY; grandchildren Robert and Jean Franzino and Christopher and Geoffrey Aung. He is also survived by his brother Donald Rathgeb, of Essex Junction, Vermont, his sister, Mary Elizabeth Rathgeb, RSHM, of Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Rathgeb.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, Port Chester, NY. Interment to followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rye Brook, NY.
