His sister Barbara was born in 1939 in Port Chester, New York, when John Harry was 8 years old. John also had an older brother named Daniel who was born in 1928. During High school, he played varsity football all 4 years and was a co-captain in his senior year. He was also in Glee Club and participated in the leaders club all throughout high school. He managed the basketball team as a freshman and played baseball as a senior. He was in band his first two years of high school. He was enlisted in the military during 1952. During the Korean War, John served in the U.S. Air Force.
