John Sammel

John Sammel was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 19, 1926 to John J. and Blanche Hardenburgh Sammel. He had one sister, Blanche and two brothers Richard and Roger. The family moved to Rye in 1941 and they lived at 2 Dearborn Avenue.

John was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1944. He enlisted 23 Jul 1945 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served with the Ninth Air Force and his Active Duty Service Number 42250671.

The Ninth Air Force (9 AF) was the primary tactical air arm of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the European Theater, playing a decisive role in the liberation of Western Europe.

He rose to the rank of corporal and served with European occupation forces. John was honorably discharged December 27, 1946.

On June 11, 1949, he married Ruth Robinson and they had one child. The Rev. Walter F. Hottman officiated at the 11 A.- M. ceremony before an altar banked with gladioli and carnations, at St.
John’s in the Wilderness Church, and a reception followed at Del Bello Inn, Stony Point, N. Y.

In 1951 John both joins and works for the National Guard in White Plains. He trained the weekend warriors. In 1964 he moved to Vermont and became a farmer. In 1970 he moved to NH and got into construction.

As of 2012 he was still working in the construction industry.
