Description

Mary Schindo was born on June 16, 1924, the daughter of John and Margaret Schindo. She had two brothers John and Robert. In Rye her family lived at 8 Summit Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Mary was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942.

At Rye High School, she was an outstanding athlete, earning letters in basketball and field hockey. She was also an accomplished golfer and bowler.

Mary enlisted in 1944 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. During World War II, she served in the US Coast Guard in an administrative role on Governor’s Island.

Mary Schindo, of 8 Summit Avenue, has completed her boot training at the U. S. Coast Guard Training Station in Palm Beach, Fla. She has been assigned to New York for active duty as a Seaman 2/c. Seaman Schindo attended Rye High School.

The SPARS were the official WWII-era women’s branch of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Historian’s Office (.mil), established on November 23, 1942, to “release a man to serve at sea” by filling shore-based roles. Derived from the motto Semper Paratus, Always Ready, over 10,000 women served, performing 43 different job ratings, including clerical, communications, and technical roles.

After the war, she moved to Ithaca, N.Y. to assist returning GIs in the admissions office at Cornell University, before eventually returning to Rye and her New York City-based job with Travelers Insurance.

In 1954, she married Jim Savage, a Rye Police Officer, and raised a family in Port Chester.

“Our mom had a flair for fashion and enjoyed her work with Ann Stephens, a women’s clothing retailer with shops in Port Chester and Westport and Ridgefield, Connecticut,” said her sons James and Richard.

Mary E. Savage of Port Chester, N.Y. died on November 11, 2021, after a long and wonderful life.

In addition to her two sons, of whom she was always proud, she is survived by her grandchildren, Grace and Jack, whom she took great delight in watching grow up.

Mrs. Savage was predeceased by her husband and her brothers, Bobby and Jack.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, November 19, 2021 at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rye Brook.
