Winchester Sherman was born on January 5, 1920, in Rye, New York, son of Herbert A. and Katharine Winchester Sherman Sr. He had one brother and in Rye his family lived at 734 Boston Post Road. Winchester was a graduate of Phillips Academy in 1938, and Yale University in 1942. He was a direct descendant of Roger Sherman, the only man to sign the four charters of American liberty, including the Declaration of Independence.

Winchester served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. He enlisted on June 18, 1942 and served as a Lieutenant in the 110th Field Artillery Battalion.

The 110th Field Artillery Battalion (now the 110th Information Operations Battalion) is a historic Maryland National Guard unit best known for its service during World War II as part of the 29th Infantry Division. The battalion landed at Omaha Beach on D+1 (June 7, 1944). It provided direct fire support to the 115th Infantry Regiment throughout the Normandy campaign and the liberation of France.

Winchester contracted double pnemonia just before the D-day invasion and was shipped home to the US. He was honorably discharged December 23, 1944

He married Laura C Coston September 23, 1944 in Washington, Maryland at St. Paul’s Methodist Church.
The Rev. Harry C. Marsh, pastor of the church, officiated as the couple exchanged their marriage vows in the presence of a large assemblage of guests.

After his discharge Winchester was employed at R.D. McKee and was in charge of industrial sales. He was a member of Assembly Club, Fountain Head Country Club; and Society of Cincinnati. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served as senior warden, and a vestryman, lay reader and chalicer.

Winchester Sherman died on January 8, 1975, in Hagerstown, Maryland, at the age of 55, and was buried there.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura C. Coston Sherman; a son, Winchester Sherman Jr. of Traben Trabach, Germany; and a brother, Herbert A. Sherman Jr. of Newtown, Conn.
