Description

Arthur George Stanten Jr. was born on November 4, 1917, in Chigago, Illinois, to (Mary) Hazel Swart and Arthur George Stanten Sr.. He was raised and educated in Illinois and was a graduate New Trier Township High School and of Lake Forest College. His parents moved to Rye in 1942 and lived at Blind Brook Lodge.

Arthur enlisted January 11, 1944 and served as a Private First Class (PFC) in the U.S. Third Army during World War II.

The United States Third Army, famously known as “Patton’s Own,” became legendary during World War II for its high-speed armored maneuvers across Europe. Under the aggressive leadership of General George S. Patton, Jr., the Third Army spearheaded the Allied breakout from Normandy and conducted a record-breaking dash across France, Germany, and into Czechoslovakia.

On November 10, 1944, U.S. Third Army was deeply engaged in the intense Lorraine Campaign (Sept-Dec 1944), focused on breaching Germany’s Siegfried Line and capturing fortified German cities like Metz, pushing into the Saarland.

Arthur was wounded November 10, 1944 while serving with General Patton’s Third Army. He was flown to a hospital in England to recuperate and received the Purple Heart.

After his honorable discharge he returned to the US. On May 19, 1945, he married Mary Louise Lewis (1922–2010) in San Diego. They made San Diego their home and raised two children. Arthur worked in the insurance business as an underwriter for many years. Mary devoted herself to various charity organizations in San Diego while raising her family.

Arthur George Stanten died on July 1, 2001, in San Diego, California, at the age of 83. He is buried at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California (Section A-E, Site C-1625A).

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, a son William (Bill) Stanten of San Diego and wife Sandy; daughter Sarah (Sally) Rodriguez of Honolulu and husband Richard; and granddaughters Avery and Ana Rosier, also of Honolulu.
