The United States Naval Construction Battalions, famously known as the Seabees (a play on the initials “CB”), were established on March 5, 1942, under the leadership of Rear Admiral Ben Moreell. Created to replace civilian contractors who could not legally defend themselves under international law, the Seabees were unique as combat-trained construction workers capable of building and defending vital infrastructure. Their official motto is “Construimus, Batuimus” (“We Build, We Fight”), while their legendary informal slogan is “Can Do”.
Allen returned to the US in June 1946 and received his honorable discharge on July 31, 1946. He returned to school and graduated Rye High School in the class of 1947.
Allen married Miss Sally Jane Cavanaugh June 25,1949 at St. Mary’s Church, Greenwich, CT. A reception followed at the Westchester Country Club. They would have two children during their marriage. Allen at the time was district manager for the J. A. Sexauer Manufacturing Company, Tennessee, where the couple would temporarily reside.
They would soon return to the area and start raising their family. They lived in Pearl River, NY. and Allen would hold various positions in his career. He worked for Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT and then as a manager for Budget Finance in Yonkers, NY.
Allen Donald Strathy Jr. died on November 4, 1974, at the age of 47, and was buried in Viola, New York at Gary Onderdonk Veterans Memorial Cemetery
