John R. Verille

John R. Verille was born on June 11, 1921, in Rye, New York, his father, Joseph, was 36 and his mother, Catherine, was 30. He had five brothers Louis, Leonard, Daniel, Joseph and Paul and two sisters Florence and Violet. In Rye his family lived at 23 High Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. John attended Rye schools and was a Rye High School graduate, Class of 1940. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

John was made a sergeant in the Army while on duty in the Panama Canal Department with the Coastal Artillery and he seved there for 26 months.

Pamama Canal Depertment- On 10 February 1941, the Caribbean Defense Command was established as a theater command responsible for tactical control of the Panama Canal and Puerto Rican Departments, as well as bases in the Caribbean, eventually taking control of air and naval forces as well. It was co-located with the department headquarters at Quarry Heights, under the command of the department commander. During World War II, the department reached its peak strength in January 1943, when 68,000 men were under its control.

VERILLE John R. Verille, 56, of 9405 NW 80th, Street, Tamarac, on Thursday. A four year resident from Rye, N Y, Survived by his wife Mildred; son Robert J. Verille; two daughters Mrs. Joseph Lionetti and Miss Dawn Venlle; one grandchild; mother Mrs. Catherine Verille; five brothers Lewis, Daniel, Paul, Joseph and Leonard; two sisters Mrs. Florence Menick and Mrs. Vicky Lanzarone. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Mass of the Resurrection 9 30 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
