William Monroe Young was born on September 24, 1921, to Marion Fern Boyce and William Monroe Young. William was a graduate from the Choate School, attended Williams College and graduated from the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania.

He married Nancy Josephine Oliver on July 27, 1943, in New York City, New York. They had three children during their marriage. In Rye his family lived at Blind Brook Lodge.

William enlisted February 23, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he was an Infantryman with the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division in Italy. He was in action from Salerno to the outskirts of Bologna, including the battles of Anzio and Monte’ Cassino. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

On July 2 he was given the Purple
Heart and as soon as he recovered
sufficiently returned to active duty.
He was in
The Battle of Monte Cassino.
Sergeant Young is with the
34th Division of the Fifth Army. He enlisted in August, 1942 and has seen
fourteen months of active service. His
wife, the former Miss Nancy Oliver,
makes her home in Montclair, N. J.
Sergeant Young attended Rye Country Day School and is a graduate of
Choate. He attended Williams College and Horton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His family
have had a letter from him this week
stating he will probably be out of
action for two months.

Staff Sergt. William M. Young, Jr. , U. S. Army, and Mrs. Young are with Mr. and Mrs. William M. Young at Blind Brook Lodge during his two weeks leave from the Rhodes General Hospital in Utica. Sergt. Young was overseas eighteen months and is convalescing from battle wounds. He was with the 34th Division of the Fifth Army in Italy. Twice wounded, he received the Purple Heart and has been awarded the Bronze Star. Mrs. Young is the former Miss Nancy Oliver of Montclair, N. J. , Soon after their marriage he was sent overseas.

Post war, after three years with the Guaranty Trust Bank In New York, he Joined the American Appraisal Company and retired after 21 years as a Vice-president and Director to become the Executive Director of the National Association of Accountants In 1970. (The Association Is now named the Institute of Management Accountants).

He retired in 1980. While in New York, Mr. Young was an Elder and Trustee of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was an ardent sailor and a former active member of the Corinthians and the American Yacht Club in Rye, NY. He was an avid golfer and he and his wife moved to Delray Beach in 1987. In Delray Beach, he was a member of the Little Club and the St. Andrews Club.

William Monroe Young, Age 77, died on May 10, 1999 at the Hospice-by- the-Sea after a long struggle with esophageal cancer and diabetes.

At the time of his death, William was survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Nancy Oliver Young, a son William M. Young III, of Bath, PA; two daughters, Jo Ellyn Pederson of Sparks, MD, and Margaret O. Young of White Plains, NY., as well as 6 grandchildren.
