Richard James Young

Richard James Young was born in Portland, OR. on June 4,1924 to Avis Ruth Cooney and Guy K Young. He had one brother Rex and in Rye his family lived at 6 Hill Street.

Richard enlisted January 26, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Tec/5 attached to the 514 Engineer Depot, Company C.

Technician Fifth Grade (abbreviated as Tec 5 or T/5) was a rank in the United States Army during World War II. Soldiers with this rank typically worked in technical or support positions, such as radio operators, medics, mechanics, cooks, and clerks.

The 514th Engineer Depot Company served as a vital logistical and supply unit within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While combat engineers built bridges under fire, depot companies managed the massive flow of construction materials, heavy machinery, and explosives required to maintain the Allied advance.

Richard received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged January 25, 1946. By 1950, he was single, living in Queens, NY and working as a Taxi Cab driver. He is recognized on the Roll of Honor at Rye City Hall.

Richard James Young died June 20, 1959 at age 35, and was buried in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
