Robert Arthur Ziegelmeier

Robert Arthur Ziegelmeier was born on March 4, 1924, in New York to Hilda Jane Smith and Arthur Ziegelmeier. The family had resided in this area since 1927, having lived on Barnes Lane, Purchase, before coming to Rye. In Rye the family lived at 4 Plymouth Road and were members of the Westchester Country Club.

Robert attended Rye Country Day School was a graduate of Hotchkiss School and was a student at Cornell University when the war broke out.

Robert enlisted December 1, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His active duty service number was 12191967 and he severed with the 2nd Signal Service Battalion as a T/5.

The 2nd Signal Service Battalion was a critical cryptologic and intelligence unit of the United States Army, serving as the operational arm of the Signal Intelligence Service (SIS). In the U.S. Army during World War II, T/5 (or TEC 5) stood for Technician Fifth Grade. It was part of a specialized rank system created in 1942 to reward soldiers for technical skills without requiring them to lead combat squads.

Robert was honorably discharged March 9, 1946 and returned home to Rye. He resumed his education and graduated Columbia University in June 1949.

He married Miss Adele Mary Berbusse, daughter and Mrs. William A. Berbusse Jr., Upper King Street, Greenwich on June 14, 1949 at St. Paul’s R. C.
Church, Glenville, CT. The Rev. Edward J. Berbusse, brother of the bride, performed the ceremony and a reception was held at the Westchester Country Club. They would have four children during their marriage.

Robert was Owner and Chief Officer of Haggerty Millwork Corporation from 1949- 2000. He received the exquisite Rinehimer’s Award from the Architectural Woodworking Institute for dedicated service and achievements while serving as its Treasurer and on various committees.

He also served on the Westchester County Construction Industry Board of Directors and the Westchester Council of Arts.

Robert A. Ziegelmeier succumbed July 2, 2002 after elective surgery at New York University Medical Center. He was 78 years old.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his loving wife Adele M. (Berbusse) Ziegelmeier, his children Regina Norum of Parkersburg, WV, Richard A. Ziegelmeier of Patterson, NY, Robert E. Ziegelmeier of Somers, NY, and Rhonda Brooks of South Salem, NY, 11 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

His sons Robert and Richard, along with his grandson Casey Ziegelmeier will carry on his business at Haggerty Millwork Corporation, formerly of Mount Kisco and now located in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Services were held July 6, 2002 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Burial was at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
