Rocco C. Petta
Rocco C. Petta born June 1, 1910 in Rye, to the late Louis and Geraldine Palermo Petta. He was raised and educated in Rye and his family lived at 407 Midland Ave.
He was a graduate of Rye High School, 1931, where he played football, basketball and was a member of the track and gym teams. He attended Kent State University, Rocco took part in cross country, wrestling, and was also on the gym team.
He married Ruth Kocher November 29, 1942 at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester. at the time he was teaching at St. Mary's High School, Katonah, N. Y.
Rocco enlisted January 19, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the Air Force for three years as a Physical Training Instructor. He rose to the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged October 12, 1945
He received his Master of Arts degree from Columbia Teachers College in June 1951, where he majored in Administration of Physical Education and Health. He was then teaching Physical Education in the Greenwich Public Schools. During the Summer months he was a swimming instructor at the Greenwich Country Club.
Rocco was a devoted physical education teacher in Greenwich, Connecticut Public School System for 25 years until his retirement in 1970.
Prior to working in Greenwich he taught in Copake, NY for 3 years and also New York City Schools. He was a member of the American Legion and was an avid golfer.
Rocco Charles Petta, 91, a resident of Ocala, FL and a former resident of Rye, died May 15, 2002 in Ocala, FL.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Ruth Petta of Ocala, FL and two nephews and a niece. Visitation was at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. Monday, May 20, 2002 from 5-9 p.m.
Funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Mercy Church Westchester Ave., Port Chester on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 10:00 a.m.
Entombment followed at Saint Mary's Cemetery Rye Brook, NY.
