Description
Frederick K. Lister was the son of Frederick K. Lister, Sr. and Helen deMena Lister. Mr. Lister attended the Rye Country Day School and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy where he and his brothers later established The Lister Brothers Fund. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and obtained his master’s degree in medieval history from Columbia University.. In Rye his family lived at 11 Anchor Drive.
Frederick enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II,
Frederick married Beatrice Eleanora Bassi on December 17, 1949. He spent his entire working life of thirty-four years in various capacities with the United Nations Secretariat. In his later years, he was secretary of the Administrative Committee on Co-ordination in which the United Nations and its specialized agencies are represented by their executive heads. In retirement he never lost his interest in international affairs.
He was a Senior Research Fellow of the Ralph Bunche Institute at Columbia University, and he remained active in this country’ United Nations Association (UNA/USA). He wrote books on decision-making in international organizations, and in 1996 he authored a definitive multi-volume history of confederated governments entitled The European Union, the United Nations and the Revival of Confederal Governance. He and Beatrice enjoyed travelling to new places, and he always enjoyed playing Bridge with his friends at Waverly Heights.
Frederick Kaye Lister, long-time resident of Rye Brook, NY, died February 12, 2010 at Waverly Heights, a senior retirement center in Gladwyne, PA.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Eleanora Bassi, and his brother Donald Kaye Lister. He is survived by their two sons: Bruce K. Lister of Buffalo, NY, and Neil K. Lister (Teresa Berger) of Nashua, NH.
A memorial reception was held on Saturday February 20, 2010 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, PA. Memorial gifts may be made to The Listers Brothers Fund at Phillips Exeter Academy 20 Main St., Exeter, NH 03833.
