William N. Andrew

William N. Andrew was born on January 17th, 1919 to parents John Andrew and Jemima Gordon. They lived together at 199 Purchase Street (Street view) in Rye, New York. William grew up with 3 other siblings (John, Bruce and Alexander), being the youngest of the bunch. His father rented their home for $50/month ($950 in today’s dollars).

William attended Rye High School, class of 1937. Over the course of his education he participated in Band, Orchestra, and Dance Orchestra. After his graduation William worked as a Bookkeeper. In the last week of March in 1940 he worked 44 hours, and in 1939 he earned $726 ($13,794 in today’s dollars) and worked 38 weeks of the year.

 

William enlisted into the U.S. Military on March 19th, 1941. During WW II he was a 1st Lt. in the US Army Ordnance Division having served in the Pacific Theatre including the Battle for Okinawa . He served 2 years state side, 2 1/2 years in the Hawaiian islands and 7 months on Okinawa.

On October 31st, 1942 William married Bertha Johnson.

William was employed by Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT for 35 years, retiring in 1991 as a supervisor in the Quality Control Department.

William was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Turn of River Presbyterian Church in Stamford, CT.

He was a member of the South Congregational Church of Newport, NH, the Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post #25 American Legion in Newport and the National Chapters of the VFW and Amvets.

William N. Andrew died November 28, 2015 at the home of his nephew, Roger Anyan. He had been a resident of Unity, New London and Newport, NH since 2006.

He was pre-deceased by his 2 wives, Bertha J. Andrew, a renowned water color artist, and Shirley Andrew, and 3 brothers, Jack, Alexander and Bruce.
