John H. "Jack" Palmer

John H. "Jack" Palmer was born in New York City to the late William P. and Marjorie B. Palmer. Jack graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University (AB '47, MS '50), in Rye his family lived on Purchase Street.

Jack entered Harvard College in 1943. On April10, 1944 he left school and enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His service number was 712 98 02 and he had two years of Naval service, principally in the Pacific. (SEE MUSTER ROLLS)

Jack served on the USS Kimberly as a radio technician. The USS Kimberly (DD-521) was a Fletcher-class destroyer that served during World War II and the Korean War.

Commissioned in May 1943, she primarily operated in the Pacific theater during World War II, earning five battle stars.

She participated in operations in the Gilbert Islands, the Kurile Islands, Leyte, and Okinawa. Jack's ship, a destroyer, The USS Kimberly, was the sole escort of the USS Missouri from Tokyo back to the Atlantic Coast after the signing of the Japaneese surrender aboard the Missouri.

After his honorable discharge, he returned Harvard College and was graduated in 1949. In 1950, he received the Master of Arts Degree from Harvard.

Jack started his career with the Watson Scientific Laboratory of the International Business Machines Corporation.

He married Anne Hulick in 1952 and they would have three children.

Jack spent his career at IBM, where he worked on the development of some of its earliest computers. In his free time, Jack enjoyed sailing, music, math puzzles and reading, especially the works of P.G. Wodehouse. He was a member of the American Yacht Club, Rye, and the Harvard Club of New York..

John H. Palmer, 89, of North Andover, MA, formerly of New Milford, CT, passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2015.

He was the beloved husband of the late Anne (Hulick) Palmer. Brother of William P. Palmer, Jr. and his wife Ethel of Danbury, CT. Predeceased by his brother David B. Palmer and his wife Elna. Loving father of Stephen and his wife Kate of Middleton, MA, Thomas and his wife Linda of Milton, MA, and Aline (Palmer) Reynders and her husband Mark of Simi Valley, CA. Dear Granddad of Scott, Craig, Emily, Elizabeth, Nathan, and Stephen.
