BIOGRAPHY
 
Oliver Z. Balf was born in New York in 1927. In Rye his family lived at 21 Purchase Street. Oliver enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Oliver Z. Balf lived above his fathers store at 21 Purchase Street. He graduated from Rye High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy at the age of 17 in early 1945 as a flight mechanic. After WWII he became an acclaimed artist. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Rye High School Graduate, class of 1944

BALF, Oliver Z. Of Rockport, MA, renowned and beloved artist and founding faculty of Montserrat College of Art, died suddenly in Israel on Oct. 15. Survived by wife Nancy (Miller), sons Michael and wife Rachel of Israel, Thomas and wife Donna of Gloucester, Todd and wife Patty of Beverly and seven grandchildren. Memorial Service on Nov. 28, 2:30-4:30 at the Rockport Public Library. Friends invited to long planned art show at the Rockport Art Assoc., Sunday, Oct. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oliver Balf Memorial Scholarship Fund at Montserrat College of Art, 23 Essex St., Beverly, MA 01915.
