Description
George S. Balf was born in New York on December 14, 1922. In Rye his family lived at 21 Purchase Street. George’s family consisted of his father Theodore, his mother Celia, his younger brother Oliver, and the family’s servant Josephine Wosetowski.
George’s father had a high school education, and worked as a watchmaker at a local jewelry shop. George’s mother also had a high school education, and was a homemaker.
George was a proud member of the Rye High School class of 1940. In high school George was a key member of the Hitching post, he also took part in the school band. In his free time George would be seen around the tennis courts, where he was the assistant manager of the tennis team.
After high school George took some time off, before being drafted into the US Army in April of 1943. He served our country for nearly three years in the world’s deadliest war. In January of 1946 George received an honorable discharge.
In March of 1950 the marriage of Miss Nancy Sue Slyn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Slyn, and Mr. George S. Balf, son of Mr. Theodore Balf of Rye, N. Y., took place in the Terrace Room of the Kentucky Hotel. Rabbi J. J. Gittleman officiated at the ceremony, which was followed by a dinner and reception at the hotel.
George and Nancy Sue would settle in Kentucky and become owners of the old Family Clothing & Furniture Co. and members of Adath Jeshurun Congregation.
George S. Balf, 73, died on 3/7/1996 at Suburban Medical Center, Louisville, Kentucky. At the time of his death survivors included his wife, the former Nancy Slyn; a daughter, Cindy Balf; a son, Stephen Balf; a brother, Oliver Balf; and a grandchild.

Came across your site and the picture and information about my dad. I had the opportunity to visit Rye last summer and visit the site of my grandfather’s jewelry store on Purchase Street.
