Thomas P. Coughlin

Thomas P. Coughlin was born January 10, 1912, son of the late James Joseph and Mary Ann McCaferty Coughlin. In Rye his family lived at 209 Purchase Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Thomas attended the Resurrection School and Rye High School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Thomas served as a supply staff sergeant in Headquarters Battery, 203rd Field Artillery Group, assigned to the XX Corps.

The XX Corps of the United States Army fought from northern France to Austria in World War II. Constituted on 10 October 1943 by re-designating the IV Armored Corps of the Army Ground Forces, a training organization which had been activated at Camp Young, California on 5 September 1942, XX Corps became operational in France as part of Lieutenant General George S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army on 1 August 1944.

XX Corps is credited with service in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. Thomas served three years and taking part in four European campaigns. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

After the war, Thomas went back to his job at Rye, Playland. He was associated with Playland for more than 35 years and lifetime resident of Rye. Thomas married Jane Frances Keegan October 2, 1948. They had two children a daughter, Marianne and a son James Thomas.

Thomas Patrick Coughlin, 53, superintendent of Playland, died at his home, 45 Roosevelt Avenue, 4/1/1965 of a heart attack. He had been recuperating at home after treatment at United Hospital, February 14 to March 6, for a coronary condition.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, the former Jane Frances Keegan a daughter, Marianne, a sophomore at Resurrection Academy; a son, James Thomas, an eighth grade student at Resurrection School; two sisters, Mrs. Janet McCann and Mrs. Mary Langhammer, both of Rye, and a niece and nephew.

Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
