Walter W. Huhne was born in New York in 1922. In Rye his family lived at 135 Locust Avenue. Walter was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1940. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Initially designated engineer amphibian brigades, they were redesignated engineer special brigades in 1943.
