Louis N. Jones

Louis N. Jones was born October 10, 1919 in Palmer Springs, VA to Elizabeth Alexander and Taylor Jones. His father was a farmer and Louis was the youngest of ten and was raised and received his early education in Virginia.

He went on to graduate Shaw University in Raleigh, NC in 1941, where he majored in English and History. In 1942 Louis was living with family in Rye at 7 Sylvan Place.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

This will be the first group to leave from Rye, and it has been arranged to have departures alternate between Mamaroneck and Rye. Those who left on Wednesday included Louis N. Jones, 7 Sylvan Place;

Louis would serve three years in the Army and earn 2 battle stars for his service in North Africa and Italy. He was discharged in November 1945 as a staff sergeant of the 701st Chemical Maintenance Company after more than two years service overseas.

Louis married Mary Louise Plummer December 28, 1947 in Warrenton Township, NC. In 1948 the couple were living in Rye and Louis was very active in the local branch of the NAACP.

Louis N. Jones of Rye outlined achievements of the organization during the past seven years, listing as some of the major accomplishments the promotion of better racial relations; increased voting of Negroes; support of the Red Cross, United Hospital and Community Chest; recognition of Negro problems and the fostering of social, political and economic aid; forums and radio broadcasts sponsored by the organization, offering educational opportunities

By 1950 Louis and his wife had moved from the area and were living in Queens and Louis was working as a clerk for the veterans Administration.
