Livingston “Andrew” McDowell

Livingston “Andrew” McDowell was born on September 24, 1924, in Tarrytown, New York, to Georgina Horne, age 31, and Livingston McDowell, age 28. He was raised and educated in Tarrytown and Middletown, NJ. He had two sister and while in Rye the family lived at 105 North St.

Andrew enlisted December 12, 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy. During World War II he served with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He served aboard the USS Chester (CA-27) as a radioman and his service number was 7103200. (See Muster Rolls) also (See Draft Notice)

USS Chester (CA-27) was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser (originally classified as a light cruiser CL-27, then reclassified CA-27 in 1931). Commissioned in 1930, she served extensively throughout World War II in the Pacific Theater, earning eleven battle stars. She was present near Pearl Harbor during the 1941 attack and participated in major actions including the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Guadalcanal-Tulagi raid, the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, bombardments of Iwo Jima, and post-war occupation landings in Japan. She survived a torpedo hit from a Japanese submarine in October 1942, which caused significant damage but was repaired.

Andrew was honorably discharged on January 4, 1946.

He married Miss Peggy Ann Cosentino October 8,1949 in Long Branch, NJ. They would have six children. After many years raising their family in Middletown Township, NJ the family relocated to Clearwater, FL

He was superintendent of water pollution control in Clearwater, a member and past officer of the Clearwater Lions Club.

Andrew was a former member of the Middletown, N.J., Lions Club: a former member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Red Bank, N.J.; and a manager of little league baseball in Clearwater.

Andrew J. McDowell, 47, formerly of Middletown Township, N.J. died July 2, 1972, while vacationing in St. Augustine.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, the former Peggy Ann Cosentino: one son, Daniel G. McDowell, Largo, Fla.; five daughters, Bonnie, Peggy, Laurie, Georgina, and Andrea, all at home: two sisters, Mrs. Charles Hickman, Long Island, N.Y. and Mrs. Nancy Fritch, in Wisconsin.
