Sidney Perry Openshaw

Sidney Perry Openshaw was born in New York in 1926. In Rye his family lived on Purchase Street. He was raised and educated in Rye schools and attended Rye High School where he ran track. Growing up his father would take him to Florida each winter break to go Marlin fishing.

Sidney enlisted October 5, 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His service number was 2256201 (SEE MUSTER ROLLS) he served aboard thee The USS Belle Isle (AG-73/AKS-21).

The USS Belle Isle was a Basilan-class miscellaneous auxiliary ship that served the US Navy during and after World War II. After its initial commissioning in November 1944, it was decommissioned for conversion into an electronics repair ship and recommissioned in July 1945. The Belle Isle was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, where it performed repair duties for US naval vessels in Okinawa and Japan

Perry was honorably discharged November 22, 1947. By then his family had moved to California. In the 1950 census he was living with his parents and self employed as a business owner in the wholesale dry goods industry.

Sidney Perry Openshaw died on October 27, 1999, in Van Nuys, California, when he was 73 years old.
