Francis J. Quirk was born in Rye on March 14 1909 son of the late Peter and Agnes Gallagher Quirk. He attended Resurrection Grammar School and was graduated from Rye High School in 1925. In Rye his family lived at 19 Meadow and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
Francis enlisted in December 21,1942 and served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an air test mechanic and crew chief. He was honorably discharged on October 14,1945
After the war, Francis was owner and operator of Quirk Motor Service in Rye for more than 50 years.The firm which is now owned by his son Anthony John Quirk of Rye.
A member of one of the oldest families in Rye, Francis was a 43-year member and former captain of the Poningo Engine and Hook Fire Company in Rye. He was a founding member of the Westchester Volunteer Firemans Association. He also was a member of the Westchester County Chiefs Emergency Plan and the Port Chester Rye Ex-Chiefs Association
A collector of antique fire engines he was a member of the Connecticut Cellar Savers, the Engine 260 Club and a charter member of the Fairchester Hose Association all firemen’s associations for collectors. He and his son had as many as 11 antique trucks at one time.
Francis Joseph Quirk Rye Fin Chief bom 1974 to 1976 died Thursday at his summer home in Orleans Mass after a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Rye he was 7l. In addition to his son at the time of his death he was survived by his wife Rita M Crolly Quirk of the home address, Sylvan Place Rye ,a sister Barbara Buns of Rye two brothers Leslie Peter Quirk of Rye and John P Quirk of Orleans Mass and a granddaughter.
