John T Schmidt was born April 19, 1927, in Rye, NY to Arthur and Charlotte Johnson Schmidt. He grew up in Harrison and graduated from Harrison High School in 1945. He had one sister and two brothers and in Rye his family lived at 5 York Avenue.
John enlisted July 23, 1945 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in a medical detachment at Halloran General Hospital.
Halloran General Hospital was a massive U.S. Army hospital on Staten Island, New York, established during World War II at the site intended for the Willowbrook State School for the developmentally disabled. It became the largest Army hospital in the U.S., treating thousands of wounded soldiers with orthopedic and reconstructive surgery.
John was honorably discharged on December 28, 1946.
He married Arlene Becker June 7, 1953, at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle. His wife died in 1982. He was a manager at New York Telephone Co. for 30 years. After residing in Harrison, John lived in Thornwood and Hawthorne for 25 years. He moved to Palm Coast, Fla, in 1989.
John T. “Jack” Schmidt, a former Westchester resident died Tuesday, February 24, 1998, at Ormond (Fla) Memorial Hospital. He was 70.
At the time of his death, he was survived by a son, John T. Jr. of Palm Coast; a daughter, Joanne Toth of Palm Coast; a sister, Charlotte Gross of Blauvelt; a brother, Arthur Schmidt of Franklin, N.C.; and three grandsons.
Burial was at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, NY .
