Edmund R. Swanberg

Edmund R. Swanberg was born in Newton, Mass on Oct 18, 1921 to Olga A Clement, age 23, and Raymond Charles Swanberg, age 30.. In Rye his family lived at 66 Milton Road. ”Ned” graduated from Rye (NY) High School class of 1939 and MIT, class of 1943, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Immediately upon graduation, Ned entered Officers Candidate School, married his sweetheart Ruth and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army His service to his country was planning and control officer of the Red River Ordnance Depot in Texarkana, Texas, after which he was commissioned captain

Entering civilian life in 1946, Ned joined the investment counsel firm Scudder, Stevens & Clark of Boston and New York, where he established his career of 52 years

As a young research analyst at SS&C Ned followed chemical, drug, tire and rubber and photographic industries, developing contacts at leading companies such as EI DuPont, Eastman Kodak, Dow Chemical, Union Carbide and Goodyear Tire among others
He advanced at SS&C to co-director of research and was elected to partner in 1961

Subsequently, he became director, president and portfolio manager of the company’s Development, Special Mutual and International Funds He retired in 1998 when Scudder was sold to Zurich Insurance Nevertheless, Ned continued to commute to NYC on business for the next 15 years and was one of this publication’s front page features in 2012 – Ned Swanberg – Still Riding the Rails at 90 Years Young

During his residence in New Canaan of 60 years, Ned was a pillar of his community He was active as treasurer of the United Fund, served on the Republican Town Committee for 12 years, and district leader and delegate to the State Republican Conventions for many years

Additionally, Ned served on the board of governors of the Country Club of New Canaan and president in 1970-72 He was also a trustee of St Luke’s School and a board member of the Waveny Care Center

Ned’s greatest civic contribution was as one of the five founders of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan in 1955 He served on the search committee which chose the Rev T Guthrie Speers, Jr as its first pastor Ned served as treasurer, elder and third clerk of session of the church

Ned was a gifted sportsman well into his advanced years, golfing into his 90s as a member of the US Seniors’ Golf Association and downhill skiing and playing paddle tennis well into his 80s A gifted paddle tennis player, Ned was instrumental in traveling the country to promote the nascent sport

He was a three-time winner of the National Men’s Doubles Seniors Championship Ned served as a treasurer and a president of the American Platform Tennis Association in the 1970s
Ned belonged to several clubs including the Union and Racquet and Tennis Clubs of New York, the Blind Brook Club, Country Club of New Canaan, and the Wharf Rat Club in Nantucket, Mass

Affectionately called Nedo by family and friends, he will long be remembered for his gentlemanly grace and deep devotion to his beloved family, friends and community


Edmund R Swanberg, 93, died peacefully on April 12, 2015 Born in Newton, Mass on Oct 18, 1921

At the time of his death he was survived by Ruth, his adored wife of nearly 72 years, and three children: Linda S Musser (William), Charles Howard (Robin) and Peter Bush (Eileen) as well as eight grandchildren: Philip A Musser, Lila M Preston, Carly A Sposato, and Garrett, Trevor, Molly, Conor and Tyler Swanberg and six great-grandchildren .

A memorial service and reception will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan on May 2, at 11 am
