Edgar Beach Van Winkle was born on September 1, 1916, in Rye, New York, to Mary Laird Busk, and William Mitchell Van Winkle. He had one brother and one sister and in Rye his family lived on Forest Ave.. Edgar prepared at St. Paul’s School for Harvard, whence he was graduated in 1937. He was on the freshman crew at Harvard and was a member of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 and the Owl.
He married Cornelia Whitehouse McLoughlin on January 12, 1939, at Christ’s Episcopal Church, Rye, New York. The ceremony, performed by the Rev. Stanley S. Kilbourne, was followed by a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Manny, of Apawamis Avenue, Rye. They had three children during their marriage. Before the war, he was associated with Joseph Walker & Sons, New York.
Edgar served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served at Fleet Sonar School in Key West, FL, service # 908 08 79. (See Muster Rolls)
After the war, Edgar and Cornelia moved to Bedford, NY to raise their family. He spent his career in advertising and was a member of the Audubon Society, where he was an ardent photographer of bird life.
Edgar Beach Van Winkle died on July 31, 2002, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, at the age of 85.
Edgar Beach Van Winkle II, 86, of the Cypress of Hilton Head died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at Preston Health Center after a long illness.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Fordyce, of Hilton Head Island; a brother, Mitchell; two sons, Edgar B. Ill and Michael B.; one daughter, Edwina Sperling; three grandchildren, Edgar B. IV, Elizabeth Knapp and Ridley Sperling; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Lauren Knapp. He was predeceased by his brother William Van Winkle.
