Sidney Newman

Sidney Newman was born November 1, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York to Rose Waldner and Harry Newman, Sidney had three brothers, David, Milton and Leonard and a sister, Rose. He was raised and educated in Brooklyn, Oyster Bay, LI and Rye, NY.

The family moved to Rye in 1930 and his family lived at 15 Purchase Street. Sidney graduated Rye High School, Class of 1932, where he lettered in football. He was very active in the YMCA and the Community Chest. He would go on to attend New York University.

Sidney enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the 31st Statistical Control Unit keeping track of the Eighth Air Force in England.

Sergt, Sidney Newman is with the 31st Statistical Control Unit of the Air Corps and recently arrived in England after thirty months in this country.

The 31st Statistical Control Unit (SCU) was a specific, temporary U.S. Army Air Forces (AAF) unit during World War II responsible for inventory control, tracking aircraft, and sorting information using early computer-like machines.

Sidney married Florence Mendez June 29,1947. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Elias Solomon of Congregation Shaare Zedek, New York, and there was a reception in the Garden Room of the Hotel Ambassador.

Sidney was a partner in Newman Brothers, pipe manufacturers, New York.
