Harry L. Adams

Harry Lester Adams was born on January 30, 1906, in Greenwich, Connecticut, the son of Aaron and Ellen Connelly Adams. He was raised and attended schools in Greenwich.

Harry married Anna Herbst May 3, 1924 in Port Chester, NY He had one son and two daughters and in Rye his family lived at 290 Forest Avenue. Prior to the war, Harry was a policeman in the City of Rye.

He enlisted November 27, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a corporal assigned to the 1550th Service Unit, Corps of Military Police.

Officially established on September 26, 1941, the U.S. Army Corps of Military Police (MP) played a vital role in WWII, managing traffic, prisoners of war (POWs), and base security. MPs were essential for operations like the Red Ball Express and Normandy beach landings, often fighting as infantry. The branch also formed the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in 1944 to investigate crimes within the Army.

Harry was honorably discharged from the service on September 6, 1945.

He returned to Rye, and started his own package delivery company. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and to Local 91 of the Heat and Frost Insulators.

Harry L, Adams of Port Chester died February 13, 1977 in Fort Myers Fla. where he was vacationing. He was 71.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, the former Victoria Zygman, two daughters, Miss Doris Adams of Port Chester and 1 Mrs. James (Diane) Tipping of Woodsville, N.H. one son Harry A Adams of California and two brothers, George Adams of Port Chester and Charles of Buffalo. Other survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Edna Dougherty and Mrs. Elsie Birdsall of Mamaroneck, Mrs. Lillian Roberto and Miss Mildred Adams of Greenwich and Mrs. Ellen DePauw of Rye, four grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews..
