John Baker Jessup was born on July 30, 1921, in New York, New York, his father, Henry, was 30 and his mother, Eugenia, was 28. He attended Greenwich Country Day School, the Hotchkiss School and graduated Yale class o 1942.

In Rye his family lived on Grace Church Street and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

He married Dorothy Lucretia Milburn on January 31, 1942, at Christ’s Church in Rye.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Milburn, of Grace Church Street, have with them for over Christmas, their daughter And son-in law, Ensign and Mrs. John B. Jessup of Boston.

John served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, service # 194008. He served in the Navy as first lieutenant of a destroyer and was cited for action with the Pacific fleet from the Solomons to Okinawa.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to Yale Law School and eventually became partner with the New York City law firm Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts.

John was very active locally, he accepted appointment as chairman of the 1953 Rye Community Chest campaign.

The Community Chest was an annual fund raiser to benefit various organizations including the United Hospital, YMCA, ‘Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Visiting Nurse Association.

While an undergraduate at Yale, he directed a highly successful university campaign and had been a leading worker and captain in Rye for several years.

“We are very fortunate to have Mr. Jessup at the head of the drive this year,” said former chairman John X. McWeeney, “and I urge all the the people of Rye to follow his experienced and enthusiastic leadership to our goal.”

John would eventually leave Rye and his marriage would end in divorce. He then married Martha Jane Atwell on October 20, 1973, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Throughout his career he was member of many boards dedicated to philanthropic causes.

John Baker Jessup died on April 26, 2006, in North Salem, New York, at the age of 84.
