Thomas J. Otto

Thomas Patrick Joseph Otto was born on August 17, 1925, in Port Chester, New York, to delia Curley and Walter Julius Otto. He had two brothers Charles and Walter and a sister Kathryn. In Rye his family lived at 8 Locust Ave and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Thomas was a graduate of Resurrection School in Rye and Rye High School, Class of 1943.

Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 19, 1943, in Greensboro, North Carolina, during World War II. He was 18 years old and would serve three years as a Private First Class at the 137th AAF Base Unit. His Active Duty Service Number was 12225715.

Based on available records, the 137th AAF Base Unit (Continental Air Forces) was stationed at Marianna Army Airfield, Florida, during World War II. Thomas was honorably discharged on March 9, 1946.

Returning home to Rye, he was employed as Aircraft Instrument Mechanic for S. M. S. Instrument Sales & Service. Inc. in White Plains, NY. He later worked as a bartender at the old Outpost Restaurant in Rye and at the Rye Golf Club. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection. He moved to Florida in 1969 and resided at 5130 Southwest 40th. Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. for over 10 years.

Thomas J. Otto, a long time resident of Rye, died January 8, 1980 at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Miami, Fla. He was 54.

At the time of his death, in addition to his mother, he was survived by a sister, Mrs. George. (Kathryn) Bayha of Rye; two brothers, Charles Otto of Tuckerton, N.J. and Walter Otto of Northfield, N.H..
